All’imbrunire vola sulle acque del lago Gurrida (territorio di Randazzo), nell’estremo nord-ovest del Parco naturale dell’Etna: è lo splendido Gufo di palude (Asio flammeus)
Può apparire lungo un sentiero dell’Etna, fermarsi per qualche secondo per guardare il fortunato escursionista e scomparire subito dopo nel folto della vegetazione: è la Lepre italica o Lepre appenninica
Tra le specie animali che vivono di notte sull’Etna, citiamo la “paddòttula”, cioè la Donnola (Mustela nivalis, Linneo 1758), diffusa nell’Eurasia, nell’America del nord e nell’Africa settentrionale
Tra le rocce vulcaniche, attorno vecchi casolari, sui campi, si aggira con il suo verso gracchiante cià cià cià* la Taccola (Corvus monedula, Linneo 1758), per questo in dialetto “ciàula”, un passeriforme della famiglia dei corvidi
Il suo nome comune si deve ad un’antica credenza, secondo cui questa specie mungeva le capre, causandone malattie. Nel Catanese il Succiacapre è chiamato “cuddàru”
La testuggine di terra (Testudo hermanni, Gmelin 1789) è probabilmente l’animale più “posseduto” illegalmente dai cittadini etnei per la credenza popolare, secondo la quale tenere a casa una testuggine di terra è assicurarsi la fortuna
Falco peregrinus (Tunstall, 1771) è uno splendido uccello rapace che vive quasi in tutto il mondo. Deve il suo nome alla calotta nera che caratterizza la testa – come il cappuccio nero usato dai pellegrini
